While you can certainly extend the life of your pipes through regular maintenance, even the best plumbing systems will eventually require replacement. However, it can be difficult for many homeowners to tell when a simple repair is needed, and when it’s time for a full repiping.
If you answer yes to any of the following questions, it’s time to repipe:
- Is your water pressure low?
- Do you get burnt in the shower when someone flushes the toilet?
- Is your water dirty or rust-colored?
- Are you experiencing any leaky pipes?
- Can you see any corrosion on visible pipes?
While all of these are potential indicators that it’s time to repipe your home, the big three warning signs are low water pressure, rusty water, and leaking pipes. All of these indicate that the pipes are beginning to deteriorate, which can lead to health problems, plumbing system failure, and significant damage to your house. If you experience any of these three issues, call Repiping Professionals immediately!
The Age of Your House Matters
If your house is more than 20 years old and has never been repiped, you may be overdue. Houses built in the 1970s and 1980s are particularly susceptible to plumbing issues, as many were built with substandard polybutylene pipes. This is a plastic material (not to be confused with PEX piping) which has a tendency to break down over time, and is no longer used in homes.
Homes which were built before the 1960s often used galvanized iron pipes. In all likelihood, any galvanized pipes in your home have already failed and been replaced. If this is not the case, you’ll want to repipe immediately to avoid more serious issues down the line.
In some rare instances, homes built in the early 1900’s may feature lead piping. These pipes last 100 years or more, so it’s very possible that they are still functioning properly in your home. However, these pipes can leach lead into your water supply, which is a huge health concern! If you think your home may have lead pipes, have the water tested IMMEDIATELY.
