Plumbing is a feature we rarely think about but use all the time. Your pipes work hard to make sure your water and waste stay out of sight, out of mind. Unfortunately, over time, your pipes corrode, break down and eventually need to be replaced. The good news is, there are a few measures you can take to prolong the life of your pipes.
Prevent Clogged Drains
One easy way to extend the life of your pipes is to prevent hair and other unacceptable items from going down the sink, bathtub, and shower drains. Take time to discuss what can and cannot go down the shower drain with your family or roommates. Another preventative measure you can take is to install small, screened drain debris catchers at the bottom of your sinks, bathtubs or shower. This way the hair and other unacceptable items will be caught before they go down the drain.
Check Leaks for Water
Check your pipes for any small leaks. Small leaks left unchecked can build into larger issues down the line. You should also inspect a toilet that is running more than usual as it can create a spike in your water bill. Often toilets run because the small chain flapper is failing to seal fully. If this is the case, you may be able to fix it by replacing the part.
Inspect Pipes Every Season
As seasons change, the fluctuating temperature can cause the area around your pipes to expand and contract. Inspect your pipes every season to ensure any leaks, cracks or fissures are tended to as soon as possible. Failure to notice leaks or any other plumbing issue can cause the problem to build into a much larger, more expensive fix.
