What Can Damage Your Drain?

Making sure your drains in your bathroom and kitchen are in tip-top shape is important to maintaining maximum piping efficiency in your home. However, due to the tremendous amount of work your drains experience on a daily basis, you must be careful not to do anything which may cause significant damage to your drains in addition to the wear-and-tear of each day.

The following are things which may cause severe damage to your drain:

  • Fat, oil and grease. Arguably the most common mistake people make is pouring liquid fat, oil and grease down their kitchen drain. When these liquids cool, they solidify, causing blockage in your drain and pipes or restricting water flow.
  • Hard water. Hard water is water which contains high mineral content, consisting of calcium and magnesium carbonates. Hard water can result in calcite deposits along your drainpipes, restricting your water flow and causes substantial damage to your pipes if the problem persists.
  • Garbage. Using your drain as a trash can lead to damage and blockage. Make sure most food particles end up in the trash or disposal and make sure you don’t let paper products wash down the drainpipes.
  • Chemical drain cleaners. While they may be advertised to clear or unclog your drain, in reality, they can cause even substantial to the pipe themselves due to being highly acidic. Plus, breathing in these toxins can be detrimental to your health.
